A Central Depository System (CDS) account is where your NSE shares are stored electronically. Every investor in Kenya needs one to buy or sell stocks on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
📋 Managed by CDSC (Central Depository & Settlement Corporation)
To open your CDS account you need: National ID or Passport, KRA PIN certificate, Recent passport photo, Bank account details (for receiving dividends).
💡 Get your KRA PIN free at itax.kra.go.ke
You must open your CDS account through a CMA-licensed stockbroker. See the full list on the right. Most banks also have brokerage arms — Equity, KCB, Co-op all offer this service.
✅ Verify your broker is CMA licensed at cma.or.ke
Deposit money into your broker's account via bank transfer or M-Pesa (where available). Then place a buy order for your chosen NSE stock — specify the number of shares and price.
💰 Minimum investment: As low as KES 100 for some stocks!
NSE trades settle in T+3 (3 business days). Your shares appear in your CDS account after settlement. Dividends are paid directly to your bank account — passive income!
📈 Track your holdings at portal.cdsckenya.co.ke
These are regulated stockbrokers through whom you can open a CDS account and start trading on the NSE. Always verify current CMA licensing status.
